There is now a kerb next to a tarmac strip by the retaining wall, down through the wood. Most of the way, this strip is just wide enough to walk on and it feels much safer walking on that than the road itself when cars are coming down behind you. (I prefer to walk on that side so I can look down over the wall.) The kerb isn't made of stone, but instead seems to have been extruded in long sections made of a heavy, dark material. I have never seen that technique used before.
The strip is much wider on a bend towards the bottom of the wood, to keep vehicles away from the weak wall and edge of the road.
There is a pair of traffic lights controlling access to what is now a short stretch of singletrack road. I don't know how long cyclists going uphill on that section of road will have to clear the lights ...
I think that the lights are battery-powered. I certainly didn't notice any power cables, and there is no generator nearby. There is a locked metal box at the bottom of each light so I presume that somebody will have to make regular trips up there to replace the batteries or charge them!
