To be fair to old Boris - he did say that he wanted to introduce both (PTWs in bus lanes and cyclists - left on red) in his mayoral campaign 8 months ago.

True - but I thought both ideas were silly then and they are still silly in my view. I know this isn't P&L but I do wonder about politicians - why do they have to keep coming up with new ideas when all they have got to do is make the old ones work properly?

London's streets would be a lot better if the existing laws were properly and fairly enforced. We don't need tinkering with weird new initiatives.

I with you on this one CP. There is no reason why cyclists drivers etc couldn't get along safely and civilly if road users just followed the current rules and applied some common sense. Whether this will ever happen though, is another matter...

As regards left on red, I can see benefits and disbenefits - that's why I'd like to see a trial.

keep the road laws the same as everyone, mots people flowt them anyway. so by relaxing bits i tihnk people will push it that bit more and not obey other bits as well.

Fantastic idea. Why people think we need lights at every sodding junction I don't know. Fair enough for very large and complicated affairs but not the thousands we have to suffer in London.

The big problem with London is disclipline thats why we have RLJers and poor overtaking behaviour.

I pretty much do this at one set of traffic lights where I have to turn left anyway, or if I am feeling a bit sheepish I get off my bike walk it over the kerb and rejoin the road.
I think its a good idea, but as always you got to be sensible.

Fair enough, Origamist. I did say I was being a bit "fogeyish".

I think the idea of "naked" streets is good. Remove most of the traffic lights so all vehicles - motorised or otherwise can proceed with caution.

Yes, there are a likely to be imbeciles that do behave stupidly whatever the circumstances.

However, the research has shown that if road signs are removed then, yes, people do travel with a great deal of caution. You can see this happen when traffic lights go down or in shared spaces.

Again I agree with CP. Take everything away and I think things would improve. Part of the problem with introducing advanced lights etc, it it complicates things and makes it more likely for mistakes, ignoring the lights etc.

Take them all away and everyone knows where they stand. Your safety and everyone else's safety are down to your own actions. Someone will provide a link to the current schemes etc that have tried this approach, but I believe they work well.

They do work well but unfortunately in other countries.
