Morning Folks. Long story short, looking at lejog next year and dont know if to bikepack or go supported. Main issues I see are getting to and from the start / finish. Trains and bikes / me don't get on. 1 train all the way great, the thought of multiple changes with all the gear fills me with dread. Did think 1 way car hire but seems only good for Penzance. Any advice or experience/ knowledge from people's previous trips gratefully received. PS have trawled youtube already.

I did a one-way car hire from home to Penzance to start..
Ferry from John O' Groats to Burwick, on Orkney, ride to Kirkwall for the overnight ferry to Aberdeen to catch a train home.

I checked this out recently in a moment of madness that I might do it. One way hire of a small van was about 130 squids from near-York to Penzance in one day. It was with Enterprise who seem to have offices here and there. One day might not be enough but still it was cheaper than I thought…especially split between 2.

For the return I thought train to Inverness and one way hire again.

I also pondered pre book accommodation v last minute….I could not find an easy answer. I would not camp.

I liked the idea of the east route as I could do an overnight at home.

Good luck

One thing I did do, twice, was post stuff home to save carrying it.
First time was when I realised that I'd over-packed and didn't need a jacket, small rucksack & a couple of odds & sods.
Second time was when I'd finished with the tent and most camping stuff (I kept the stove & pans) as i was hostel or B&B.
I bought a few black sacks and a roll of tape & sent them home via Collect+

You don't say where home is but I did Leeds to Penzance train no changes (and 1st class !) then cycled / ferry across to Kirkwall and flew back to Leeds. Easy !

I did train after work from Leeds on Friday
Rode for the week and then bus from thurso to Inverness and train to Leeds.

Carbon Bike was taken apart and bin bagged and then buggie corded to the steel trusses in the coach cargo hold. Worked fine.
