I think it's more the biker attitude of using the swastika to purposely offend rather than him really being a raving nazi.
The Lord Of The Rings was anti Germanic BTW, the orcs are indeed meant to be the jerry storm troopers of the trenches.

I know Tolkein was anti germanic. He was a product of his time. He also hated industrialisation to the point that that was what The Ring represented.
Not sure about him being a puritan but you can certainly see Biblical parallels throught his work
