Very sad news. This was probably my favourite. "Everybody Knows".

Sad news, another artist I grew up with. Just disappointed I never managed to see him live. As has been said, he has this unfair image and for those who think he is just about depressing songs:

I once read his book Beautiful Losers because I was going through an introspective phase and thought I ought to. I remember it as being hard work and slightly erotic in a rather dirty sleazy way. Love his music though, ever since I heard it drifting out of my older sister's bedroom door.

Leonard Cohen is one of the very few musicians who has held an enduring appeal for me throughout the years (I could count the others on a single hand). During the 90's his would be the only music that I would listen to for months on end, and while most people would think of "Hallelujah" when the name Leonard Cohen is mentioned, that in my opinion was definitely not one of his greatest songs. For me this is definitely a sad loss, RIP Leornard.

Oh no, the wireless is going to be endlessly playing 'Hallelujah', the second worst song in popular music history

The worst is obviously 'Imagine' by John Lennon...

No comparison between the two.

Hallelujah, while undoubtedly over-exposed in recent years, is a great example of Cohen's spare but surreal songwriting.

Imagine, on the other hand, is so banal it's hard to reconcile with some of the great stuff Lennon wrote in his early years.

Everybody knows Anything by Pink Floyd is the worst in history.

He clearly decided that president trump was not for him.
"Democracy"

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

"Democracy"
........

.

Perhaps he decided the lyrics to "The Future" were more apt post Trump, and decided to get out ahead.....

Give me back my broken night
my mirrored room, my secret life
it's lonely here,
there's no one left to torture
Give me absolute control
over every living soul
And lie beside me, baby,
that's an order!
Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
and stuff it up the hole
in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother:
it is murder.

RIP LC

I wasn't too keen on Leonard Cohen, but about 12 years ago I was in a record (CD?) shop and heard some great songs. I asked what it was: Dear Heather by LC.

I duly bought it and played it over and over and have since built up my Cohen CD selection.

Apart from being a practising Jew, he was also a Buddhist monk.

RIP
