Purveyor of fine nonsense
I have developed a very effective technique for dealing with sales people;

Firstly, I make sure I know exactly what I want and that I am not going to change my mind.

Then I go into the shop and ask for exactly what I want, in the full knowledge that the salesman will try to sell me something I don't want.

Then I repeat my first request.

Then the salesman continues to try to get me to buy something that I don't want.

If this goes on to the point where I feel myself beginning to lose patience (for some reason, salespeople in electrical retail places are particularly trying), I look at the guy's name tag ("John"), then I look John directly in the eyes, grin in a slightly menacing and insane manner, and very gently say, "Now, John, listen to me very carefully. What I would like is ... (etc) ... . I don't need or want anything else. Can you do that for me please?".

John duly fetches the requested item.

Never fails - the trick is to make them feel slightly nervous for reasons that they aren't quite aware of.

Never forget - Gary Glitter's woes started at PC World. He couldn't make his computer work, took it into the Bristol branch, and they had someone there who knew how to work the on/off switch.

The rest as they say, is history.

Don't underestimate PC World!

A long time ago I also fell for the Epson ploy and found that if only one colour ran out then the whole thing shut down and refused to work until a new set was bought. It wasn't worth buying one colour as it was most of the price of a set. Why does the same colour always run out first?

I gave up on inkjet and now have a colour laser printer. It cost £99 from PC World on a sale and the toners cost £80 each but I can get a set of four (sometimes four plus one) on Ebay for less then £100. It has been working for years and I get many thousands of copies between refills.

Black ink cartridge runs out within 3 weeks. £12 for a new one.

The suppliers of printers know how to make money. They have two sets of cartridges, which have different ink volumes in them; the cartridges supplied with a printer have around 20 - 25% of the ink of a replacement set; hence the reason the cartridge supplied with the printer ran out so quickly.

Also some after market cartridges have differing amounts of ink. My old HP A3 printer only had one code for HP black ink. The boxes were marked, though not the cartridge itself, in very small print either 19ml or 42ml. Both sold at the same price.

Re-fill them yourself with replacement ink kits. The printer people go to some lengths to thwart you, but if it works, the thrill of denying Mr Canon or Mr Epson of £15 or so is well worth the trouble. Oh YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!:wahhey:

I have a HP wireless printer boght from Comet. It works well enough.

Printer ink costs around £1500 per litre.

Printers are loss leaders.

PC World  the trouble is, you walk in there uncertain of the answers (which is why you're in there in the first place)
Problems with my PC, it was only a couple of months old.
'We'll have to do a full wipe etc (not their exact words), then set it back up again'
;How much will that be ?'
'£70' (give or take)
    ' Hang on, i can do that can't i ?'
'You can sir'

i suddenly thought...WTF am i doing here, being talked into paying them to do something i can do ?

How many people pay good money for very basic services.

If you do go to one of these shops - ask if you can buy at the internet price, they will tell you that you can't

Simply get out your phone, ring the on line sales and find out the internet price.

Then ask to "Collect at Store"

Now give the order number to the salesperson and pay the internet price
