We get it both ways over here - kicking off way too early, and dragging on till feb/mar. In fact, a lot of places just leave the 'Happy New Year' banners and tinsel up till they drop down of their own accord, balloons are left up till there's not a gasp of air left in them. The Thais do love the commercial side of these occasions, and celebrate three new years with equal enthusiasm.
