Out of curiosity, why not use the ASL? It looks like a well made one.
As the road appears to go straight into 2 lanes, you could easily take control of the first one from the centre of the ASL.
You then wouldn't be in anyones way as the lights change.

Gaz, I think I mentioned this earlier, I don't like using that filter as I've seen cars realise that they want to turn left after all and pull left suddenly. Also the lanes aren't that wide and buses turn left here, so I don't want to get caught moving along the feeder with a bus turning on my left.

Anyway, I would still want to keep in the right lane until past the pothole, so the driver in front would see me pull in front of him and then perceive me to be intentionally holding him up. I think I get less hassle (I've never been beeped there) by joining the queue.

I just read the introduction of the Highway code,
"legal requirements...MUST/MUST NOT"
"advisory wording such as ‘should/should not’ or ‘do/do not’"

Think of it the other way. Being advised not to do something, and then doing it would be quite a poor defence?

Unfortunately the "should not"/"do not" are only relevant when trying to apportion liability after a crash, so as long no collision occurs your free to ignore them.
