Does anyone use one of these economy Stronglight chainsets? Are they up to the job?

490g must be bordering on too light; also I can't see how the ring is secured to the crank.

I keep thinking: strong, light, cheap - pick any two...

This a much better crankset and is going real cheap atm.

They look nice but 48t for a single speed!!! - probably too hard for me  - there are a few hills around here so I'm working on the basis of 70" or less to start with..... then I will change if I need to.

48/18 gives you 70.1 inches according to Sheldon?

Back in the 80s I fitted a cheapo 'silstar' crankset to my bike that's spent mosst of its years as a fixie and it's performed fine and ground-up some heavy hills in its time. It'll likely be just fine.
