Lighting again

Something is ringing a bell in my head about Bicyce lighting.

Can anyone confirm the requirement in BS that there should be some 'side illumination' ?
All the BS lamps I have possess a small portal in the side of the lens ( or the lens can be seen from the side ) for light to project sideways.

If this is correct, I have devised a simple 'fix'. With some tape, fix two pieces of chopped white plastic to the rim of the lamp ( Tesco 3W lamps in particular ) on the horizontal axis so the tabs glow with the lamp.

They also show in indication the lamp is 'ON'. ( idiot light )

I think I'd use the Tesco light in conjunction with another bike light, cheap one, to be seen. I have an old Every Ready halogen which has orange side flashers, not a bad old lamp but nothing in comparison to today's offerings.
