I run a Electron Terra 1 which is very bright and has a long run time. I set it pointing at the road about 20-30 foot in front of the bike which gives me a reasonable amount of notice of any obstruction/pothole and doesn't blind oncoming traffic (hopefuly). Cost is currently £55.00 at Chainreaction Cycles. This is fitted along side a Cateye EL-220 which I use as a back up. At the moment my rear is a Cateye LD-150 but that will probably upgraded/added to for next winter.
