I do even at 64.I find myself using my deafness as an excuse no to join in,too much background noise or hearing aids cannot pull out the babble fast enough,these i use as excuses.But talking about cycling or charity work that i do,it just flows,try to steer the conversation into subjects you enjoy.Even start one inbetween a conversation.Good luck.
 
It's probably not your vocab that's letting you down.
Years ago I was shown a pretty terrible series of management training films, starring old pythons and likely lads. But one piece of advice I remember being quite useful. The hapless protaganist said something like "I can't speak in public, I don't know all the big words". They gave this example (from my memory).

"Shakespeare didn't say 'Human males of increasing decrepitude tend have lapses in their capacity for recollection'. He said 'Old men forget'"

You already have the vocabulary to express your thoughts. You need to learn how to use it.

In one's purely subjective and perspicacious perspective, I decree to perpend that the appropriateness of humongous words as inconsequential significance in our quotidian activity.
