I've had a couple of LinkedIn "invitations" to connect recently from US people who claim to be wanting to help companies move into the UK market. These are "people" with whom I'm only 3rd level connected (which seems to cover about 50% of the population of the US for me) and the opportunities they are offering seem to be fairly unconnected with my past experience.

For instance:
Hello Norm

Hi I have a couple of US small capital offerings coming up that might interest you. Give me your email and I will shoot them over
I'm in two minds about it, though. Whilst my address (I use a Hotmail addy) seems to be a spam-magnet already, so things couldn't get much worse, what if these are real people with real opportunities?

As a bit more background, the most recent one is someone whose profile says that they left Uni in 2005, took 5 years to get to the position of marketing manager with one of the biggest global manufacturers and then left to set up his own agency 2 years ago. However, in all that time in marketing and consulting, he has only got 8 connections.

It stinks of con, it has alarm bells all over it, but I'm still wondering what I've got to lose from giving out a Hotmail address which is already receiving significant volumes of processed meat.

LinkedIn floated in the US last May, at a price which defies gravity on the present platform. Expect far more advertising and the mining and selling of all your personal data, because revenues per subscriber have to be at least doubled.

And "small capital offerings that might interest you" sounds like a preliminary to selling you an unbelievable investment opportunity. In my experience genuine propositions are only passed on between people who already know each other well. I would ignore it.

Norm, you seem to be bringing spam with you....

Can't you just connect with them on LinkedIn and allow them to message you using the LinkedIn service. That way if it is spam, you just report it to LinkedIn who should stop it.

I think it's Spam. I get them but I don't get the invite on the Linkedin site itself, so I figured it's some kind of spoof/phishing mail. They just get deleted.

 Indeed, although there's an aroma of toasted spam and a smoking gun in the holster of at least one of the mods.

I would, if I could find out how to "unlink" to someone on LinkedIn, just someone that I worked with that I no longer want to connect to. If anyone knows of a way, I'd love to hear it.

Never mind, I've found the "remove connection" link.

So long as you only make contact through linkedin and make sure that they can't see your email address, then you should be safe. Obviously don't give them any details you don't want to know.

It could be a good opportunity - I've had a few through linkedin, including the job change I am currently going through (just need the work permit now!!)

Where are you off to this time?
