Why is the luggage capacity of a vehicle measured in litres? I would have thought that cubic metres would be more appropriate and easier to visualize. Just a thought on a wet and windy Saturday morning.

surely multiplying / dividing by 1000 isn't beyond the wit of man?

Because the capacity of luggage itself is measured in litres? Or simply to make it sound bigger.

Cubic metres are rarely encountered and are more difficult to visualise. Litres on the other hand can be visualised using cartons of fruit juice to model volume.

This.

Everyone can visualise a 2L bottle of cheap cider, so now you can work out how many bottles your boot will hold.

I think we should go over to the size of Wales or Belgium method for working out area. Something like a fire the size of Wales, or Belgium. We could then have a boot capacity of 0.00000000000001 the size of Wales.
Wales is for area. Capacity would need to be cubic Waleses.

I used them to give an idea of weight. Most of us know what a litre carton of OJ feels like, so I invented the 'OJ-ometer'. It was intended to give a visual demonstration of how much weight I had managed to lose. Here is the reading when I had lost 5 kgs. (A litre carton of OJ does not weigh exactly 1 kg, but it is not far out.)

Unfortunately, I exceeded the capacity shown. Imagine another pile of 21 cartons, all ticked off PLUS those 5.
