I think it might have been Keith Richards who in the early days of the Stones didn't quite understand the relationship between the volume setting on his amp and the volume coming out of the sound system. So the larger the venue, the louder he'd set his amp, confusing the hell out of his sound engineer.

When I did A-level chemistry we measured the volume of solid reagents in 'Rice Crispies' and 'Sugar Puffs'.

I didn't know they were around in the 19th century... :whistle:
 
Cubic metres are rarely encountered and are more difficult to visualise. Litres on the other hand can be visualised using cartons of fruit juice to model volume.
Because of the job I can picture cubic metres more easily. 1000m3 is easier for me than 1000000 litres.
Smaller quantities I think of in drums, either 200 litre or 25 litre. Or possibly buckets.

Wales is for area. Capacity would need to be cubic Waleses.
Actually I must correct myself. That's not how area and volume are related at all. It's an area multiplied by a length, so it would be something like Wales times a double decker bus.
