It was the Little Chef on the A303 at Popham that they did up for Heston Blumental. It became a bit of a novelty item for Winchester and 'mazinstoke foodies for about a month but was never going to be a long term success.

Have only eaten in one, that decided it for me, Cambridge Rd about 30+ years ago. It was nothing like the one below.

Agreed, but ... at Barton Mills we used to prefer AJ's cafe!
with work , a greasy spoon wins hands down. but with wife and kids its LC . although in London best caff used to be a little one on Compton St in Clerkenwell. was a taxi drivers caff and you needed to time it right for a seat. run by a little italian bloke . sadly the development hipsterisation of the area meant it got demolished for a fancy apartment block

You're right they're stuck on a time warp. They really need updating or demolishing.

I once worked with a guy who said he used to be a chef, later I found out he cooked in a Little Chef, what a misnomer!

There is/was an excellent Little Chef on the northbound A1 just before the A66 Scotch Corner turn-off which is/was very popular especially in winter when the A66 got closed because of snow/ high winds. Short order cooks are worth their weight in gold if they can cook an egg properly and grill bacon crisply!

When I was a kid, we lived in Leicester and my Godmother and her family lived in Norwich, so once or twice a year we'd drive the A47 to visit. We always stopped at the Little Chef at Guyhirn, halfway. Mostly, it was just for tea and a teacake, but sometimes, a real treat, we'd have lunch. We didn't eat out a lot, so it was a treat.

Anyone remember the placemats with Little Chef locations on them? I can only remember Hickstead and Killiecrankie, but I think it was a set of four or more.

When I was a boy we used to go to the LIttle Chef in Bolton-le-Sands (it's near Lancaster) for a treat of pancakes.

I get the feeling that it's had its day. In its heyday there weren't many options on the road. MacDonalds and Supermarkets offerings are better these days

I was in the LC in Thame a while ago and ordered an Early Starter I was told they couldn't do that as they had run out if eggs. 'Hmm' says I 'what shall I have instead ?

'An omelette?' Says the waitress without the slighted hint of irony!

That's rubbish that.....one chuffin sausage? One slice of bacon? One bit of black pudding? Where's the rest of it? And as for those mushrooms....OMGFG :stop: The only thing that's right on that plate is the egg and possibly the beans. Everything else is substandard:angry:

Still there.

No doubt some on here would say it's dated, in a time warp etc.

But I would much rather eat at that Little Chef than at Scotch Corner services, where it's extravagantly priced Costa Coffee, Marks and Expensive or Burger King (OK-ish, but limited choice).

I was once refused an omelette in a Morrisons cafe, because they had run out. When I pointed out that we were actually in a supermarket stocked with lots of eggs, they eventually confessed that NOTHING on the menu is actually made on the premises. Just trucked in and microwaved.

That's no different to most pub meals - where they're bought in frozen and microwaved with some chips.

+1 to that. I'll use a Little Chef or similar if travelling - the one in Skipton is decent enough and the one near me in Mirfield was but it's now a Starbucks xx(
