The Wetherby Services are OK but there's a smashing cafe that does good, simple but substantial food at less than half the price called The Cafe and Bistro at Thorp Arch [the old Trading Estate].

Good tip.

Last time I was at Wetherby services, one of the cabins near the entrance was doing coffee and a bacon roll for £3, which I thought reasonable value.

There's a Greggs as well, although I'm not so keen on their new range of rolls.

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
Avoid the Eat and Drink company, Cherwell Valley services, at all costs. I was only using it because I had a voucher, having paid for overnight HGV parking. Here is my trip advisor review.

The LAST time we used one a couple of years ago we waited for a harassed and obviously multi-tasking young woman to seat us, waited for the food for far too long while the sole 'Chef' prepared the food and then were made to wait for over ten minutes before they deigned to take our money at the till and it was only taken after I loudly announced I was leaving in 2 minutes without paying as they couldn't be bothered to take it.

The food was OKish but the service was appalling. Not the fault of the three people working their, they were running themselves ragged but the place was very obviously under-staffed.

In between here and there
The Saving grace is that they use real ketchup, and brown sauce and reasonable bacon, sausages and beans. Most high street Cafes serve some gawd awful products with a vinegar water down sauces. The last time I had one it took me a day to recover and get re-hydrated. All this hitting the £3.99/4.99 price and then just chucking 10p sausages in to last week oil chip pan fryers should be long gone.

I was in a Happy Eater ( remember them?) one time and a chap walked in looking a bit stressed and flustered and said to me " do us a favour mate, could you give us a push ?" I said " ok, give me a sec, I'll see you outside " off he goes, I finish my tea, I go out to the car park, no sign of him! I shout " where are you mate" and I hear this voice " around the back on the swings"

Twunt!

The bacon roll and coffee deal sounds good!

Happy Eater, I remember them. Was their corporate symbol not a chap sticking his fingers back into his throat? Not the best endorsement!

Spent most of the 1990's as a service engineer working all over the country.

Little chef was pretty much the only option for roadside food as the smaller greasy spoons didn't tend to take the company credit card.
Since I left that job I've never been back, and feel no particular desire to do so.

There's an ex-LC on the northbound A38 just south of Burton that also appears to cater to the, er, lonely trucker market. Luckily, the one on the southbound side near Willington is now an OK Diner, and serves quite good American diner style food. It even serves root beer (if only in cans).
