Little trip out tomorrow. Scarborough to Whitby and back!

Got a couple of days going spare, so I'm catching an early train to Scarborough, riding the old railway track to whitby, sleeping over then riding back to get a treain home from scarborough the next day.

Looking forward to it - Anyone here done the route that can offer any top tips (other than take a good waterproof!).

I did that route a a couple of times a few years ago on my MTB.

I parked the car up in Whitby just by the viaduct. The first time I did it I got a flat within 2 miles and unknown to me snapped the rear axle, that time I was with a friend and had to abandon half way to Scarborough as he was knackered. As it turned out it was a good job we did as my back axle had snapped in half and only the quick release was holding it together, I only found this out the next day.

The second time I set off in the morning and did Scarborough and back I got back to the car late afternoon. I broke a spoke this time.

I am planning on doing it again soon on the hybrid, I just hope I can get there and back without it shaking itself to bits..

Yes take a waterproof.

Oh dear! I've heard its a bit rough in places!

Weather forecast a bit pants, don't think I'll bother taking the sunblock!

If it has been wet and judging by the rain encountered from Oxfordshire up to Leeds today, it's very lilkely, then a chunk of the route will have rivulets of water or will have had rivulets of water eroding the compacted cinder/clinker ex track bed. Expect to get your bike very dirty.

The route is not as flat as you might expect it to be seeing that it was a railway trackbed.

Three or four years ago the route was partially blocked by a rain induced landslide and my pal and I took the diversion, got lost and ended up a hundred metres further back than the start of the diversion - we reckoned that we'd been abducted by aliens and returned as faulty goods and not worth keeping but that's a separate tale.

There's a nice tea room at Ravenscar.

Yay! Weather forecast has changed from rain to sun!!!!!

The track was fine last time I used it. A very pleasant route indeed.

However the track can kick up loads and loads of black cinder or whatever.
I recommend quick dry lightweight long trousers unless you don't mind the Caribbean legs look

+1001 on the black cinder - ain't just the bike that'll get dirty! Damned stuff's like Heineken.

But a lovely ride --- enjoy!

One of my regular rides. About the only problem I find is that the cinder dust kicked up tends to combine with the lube and produces a very efficient grinding paste

You were all so right about the dirt. I don't think my once white bike will ever be clean again!

Recomend the route though, very picturesque in places. I was a bit surprised how rough the track was in places, had to really concentrate on what I was doing, was very glad I was on mountain bike with fat tyres.

Route seemed busiest between RHB and Whitby - presume alot of people use it for getting to work etc?

Quite a few people use it to commute between Whitby , Stainsacre & Hawsker, but beyond that the track is used mainly for leisure. In my opinion the best time to go that way is in the springtime when the gorse is in full bloom. some sections of track can be spectacular.

I did indeed stop at RHB, for cake though, chips were had in Whitby!
