I'm the person that runs the annual Manchester - Llandudno ride. Here are the two files that contain the flatter and hillier routes. As luck would have it, we almost ride past the front door of the Wirral Hundred in Capenhurst

In reverse, basic idea is NCN5 to Prestatyn. Then, to get to Connah's Quay you have two choices. Either the flat direct way on the main road or the hilly, less direct way inland a bit. After Connah's Quay it's pretty straightforward. Note our route takes us to Eureka Café which is very close to your destination

I'd prefer to use roads,WW, but I do want to avoid the major roads. I'd like this to be a pleasurable tribute to my mate not a stress laden arduous journey. Thanks for your reply.
If you're on strava and have a Garmin, an easy way would be to a plan a route on strava using minor roads, upload it to your garmin and just follow the directions.

There are a few potential stops for a refuel. The best is probably The Bikehub in Rhyl. It's a café and also a bike shop and it's on the NCN5 route
