Compared to a lot of places, the upper Calder Valley seemed to me to be a pretty safe and crime-free area. But then I found crime maps on police.uk...

I was pretty shocked at how many sexual and violent crimes there are. Quite a few burglaries. As for bicycle thefts - I found a little hot spot at Hebden Bridge railway station. This is a small 2 platform station serving a town with a population of only around 4,500 people...

The numbers in the black circles are just for the station. The numbers in the Bicycle theft boxes are for the whole valley.

If you dig into our local facts and figures on the police site you can see that only about 2% of crimes are solved. Even when they know who committed the crimes, about 1/3 have no action taken against them, presumably because the culprits are under-age?

Aye, the bulk of the violent crime will be domestic in nature, so not really pertinent to those that don't live in the offenders house.

The police.uk details for my neighbourhood team are well out of date. I know the gentleman named on the page is not my local officer, because I was at his retirement party about 8 months ago...

Ah, I hadn't thought of that! There were quite a few violent and/or sexual crimes reported in neighbouring streets. I had started escorting my stepdaughter back to her car now when she leaves after dark and hadn't been able to park directly outside. I'll carry on doing it anyway, just in case.

This country still functions because the huge majority are still law-abiding but God help us if any major civic disturbance breaks out.

You can see the breakdown in respect for the law in the way certain people treat the roads like their own game of Grand Theft Auto, with no regard at all for the law. Meanwhile a handful of Police hunt on the motorways using ANPR to catch idiots and tweeting about it to create an impression of a high success rate.

After a trawl round my locality I've found nothing other than: "Investigation complete; no suspect identifiedThere is insufficient evidence to bring anyone to justice at this time. The investigation may be reopened if more information becomes available."

Last set of local crime figures were released in July of this year.

It's a shame you're on "escort duty" for your stepdaughter, because of your concerns for her safety.

It is probably 99.x% unnecessary, but if something bad did happen after I worried about the risk of it, but then hadn't bothered...

I'd rather not have to deal with the feeling of guilt!

If nothing else the exercise does you good, so why not?
It's usually only walking round the corner to an adjacent street. Normally she parks right outside my house but the neighbours know that I don't drive so sometimes they park here if 'their' spots have been taken. I think the furthest away that she has had to park is about 100 metres.

As long as it isn't peeing it down it isn't a bother

We've lived in Hammersmith/Shepherds Bush for 30 years and none of us have felt remotely nervous about being on the streets at night or any other time. Our daughter recently moved to a flat in south London and I looked up the crime statistics for its postcode. They made blooming grim reading. I decided to compare them with our postcode. Our neighbourhood's statistics were far worse.
Relax.

You shouldn't have looked.................I've had my garage broken into in 25 years, it's very quiet, nothing much happens. Or does it? I got signed up to a neighbourhood watch scheme and with all the calls, texts & crime updates it was if we'd been transported into South Central LA. I left it and everything has gone quiet again. :okay:
