Lock In!!

Just as I am getting used to the new entry system to the Clyde Tunnel this happens.

I got chatting with the chap who came to 'rescue' me, nice chap. He told me that the door controllers (i.e. him) are moving away from their current base at the tunnel to a central control room in the city centre (at least 20 mins drive away!). He was reasonably sure that the emergency button would have released the door, but he couldn't confirm this.

He also suggested (as I suspected) that faced with the 'cage' type doors, a lot of people decided not to go through the tunnel (he sees this on the CCTV). I'd be really interested to know if the entry system is encouraging people to use it or discouraging them.

Oh an apparently they now have the funding to fit the same system to the north bound tunnel! :sun:

what a bloody ridiculous farce.
Surely it's a health and safety disaster - what if you were having a heart attack, or fit? Or were claustrophobic?
and why have they got locked gates anyway, if presumably they open them for anyone - or do you have to apply for some sort of pass?

There is an emergency button next to the call button. Supposedly it would release the door, although I wonder if the computer crash would affect that...?

I think it is there as a deterrent. Your ok if you don't wear a white shell suit and Burberry cap.

It doesn't bother me, but I can understand why it would bother some. That is one reason why I think this system was a mistake.

God yes. And knowing that apparently anyone can get in, and be locked in with you (assuming the opening at the other end was working). I don't think I'd trust a system like that to work.

I just wouldn't use it, and presumably that means a whopping detour?

Not the best really. At least he looked like he was trying to get to you quickly though. I bet thats the most he's exercised in weeks!

Bonj, in the event of a medical problem like you suggest, the emergency release *should* let you out. What you would do after that (e.g. while having a heart attack) is a whole other matter!

We have a similar gate at my workplace. But we dont have to wait for someone to open it.

Surely with that type of 'airlock' system they could put manual door releases for getting out?

They are closing it tomorrow to do some work, resurfacing I believe. Then at some point they are supposed to be repainting it.

It's mainly to do with perceived security of the tunnel users and to keep out loitering neds. At least that is the theory....

How does it keep them out? It wasn't quite clear, do you have to be 'cleared' to get in? In which case, what if you are a ned who just happens to want to walk through? Surely the neds could just push the button and enter, one by one, if they wanted.

A decent CCTV system with a loudspeaker telling folk to disperse would be as effective, I reckon.

I think if i was in magnatom's situation I would have pressed the emergency release whether i was having an emergency or not.
They can't just imprison you!

is that what you did magnatom?
