would you lock your bike to the other bike?

What I have seen people do, and which makes sense but seems to be more common among motorcyclists is to lock your bike to another bikes lock. You can both leave when you want but it makes it a damn site harder for someone to just sling your bike, lock and all, in the back of a van.

Good solution if there isn't anything secure to which to lock your bike.

I don't think I've been very clear.

My question is if you found someone had done it to you, would you then also lock the bikes together so they had to call you to get their bike unlocked. i.e. inconvenience them because they've inconvenience you or is that just vindictive?

Yes, with that rephrased question I would. If they were so inconsiderate to do that then I wouldn't expect them to be considerate enough to call you when they deign to allow you to leave.

If someone locked their bike to mine I would get a hacksaw and cut the lock if possible or their bike in half as a last resort.

I'd only do this if I was with the other person whose bike it was. Locking my bike to a stranger's would feel really weird - and I wouldn't want them to do it to mine were the situation reversed.

There was a "trend" among thieves, there prob still is, where they put their lock on your bike too when your away. Thus, hoping that you will leave your bike there overnight where upon they return with a nice big chain cutter, remove your and their own chain, and make off with your bike. This happend to me about 10years or so ago. Lucky enough I had access to a "nice big chain cutter" myself, and left their cut lock on the floor when i took my bike home.

I guess the moral of this story is, if you find yourself in that situation with either a crappy bike locked to your nice expensive one, or another chain on it, have that chain/lock cut off ASAP, even if it means going to your local hardware store and buying a "nice big chain cutter". Will save you money in long term

I was going to post something similar.

A few years ago in Portsmouth this happened to me, and I asked a passing PC what I could do - he assisted me in geting it taken off by a Locksmith for this very reason and then took the lock away for fingerprinting.

The trick apparently is to wait until you come back and then when you leave again they know there will be some time and cut off your lock. If anyone is watching there is a plausible story that you have locked their bike!
