hi
new to this so please bear with me. just purchased a mountain bike and want a lock to secure when leaving outside gym etc. i have been looking at kryptonite, masterlock and onguard, all the gold sold secure ones. was going to buy the masterlock until i read quite a few reviews stating that keys broke quite easily. changed to the onguard pitbull and read about the same problem. i don't want to spend a fortune, up to £40 but i am lost now so can anyone give me some advice. cheers

I use one of these, never had an issue. Silver rated I think. http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Kryptonite-Evolution-Mini-7-Lock-With-4-Foot-Kryptoflex-Cable_53382.htm

Get into good gold like Fahgettaboutit or Abus Granit, more like £60+

thanks for the advice. i've looked at these but was worried about them being small and their ability to fit around posts etc. i see what you mean though with them being small making it harder to hack through. do you have any problems?

I can't give you a product-specific recommendation but as vickster said, a smaller D lock is a good idea as it means a theif does not have the option of using a jack on the lock, and must instead saw through or drill the lock. I was hesitant about getting my Fahgettaboudit Mini because of it's small size but it's easy to find a thin object to lock it too, I need a lock like that though because I'll be riding nearly every day at uni.

No problem with Sheffield stands, can't use a fat lampost, but I don't anyhow

If you want a good bigger lock, abus granit x (is my other one when I want more security or two D locks)

I bought a Masterlock Street Fortum about five years ago and have never had a key problem. If you are worried about it, graphite dust is the top of the range lock lubricant but I just squirt in some WD40 once in a blue moon. No lock can save your bike if somebody wants it badly enough. I just added my bikes to my house contents insurance and got the cheapest Gold-rated Sold Secure lock that I could find. The lock cost about £25 and the annual extra cover for £1500 of bikes is under £25 pa. If the bike get's nicked, I'll be mightily pissed off but it won't be the end of the world financially. Personally, I would never trust any lock, however expensive, to save my bike from theft.

U locks can be split with a "Bottle Jack"

No space to insert one and it cannot be used

hi everyone. all your replies have been helpful but your experience shows me just how vulnerable our pride and joys are. i've probably done more research on locks now than on teh actual bike. i think the best solution is not to leave it in dodgy places at all. it really angers me as the toe rags who steal the bike only get a fraction of what they are worth.

They just use a portable angle grinder with a 2mm thin metal cutting disk instead. On a busy street, nobody takes any notice.
