I never carry a lock it damages the frame and bangs about whilst riding. It adds loads of weight which seems ridiculous given how much money I spend on lightweight components.

On the rare occasion I have to stop I either take the bike with me . (I carried through the corridors and into the ward when visiting my Sister) or I get someone to watch it for me.

If I had to leave my bike on a regular basis I would build a bike out of scrap parts so it wasn't attractive to thieves.

I learnt the hard way this morning that no amount of tightening will safely hold my lock on the front fork. After a seriously bumpy section it was at 90 degrees to the wheel. If it'd bounced the other way I'd be off.

The problem with compact frames is that there is nowhere to fit a D lock. I recently fixed my lock to the front forks. Before I did I checked whether it could swing into the spokes, fortunately the Blackburn low-rider rack I have fitted means it can't.

I have a cheap cable lock I will take with me on any weekend rides just incase I need to stop off at the public toilets or if on CTC rides we nip into the cafe (or two or three...). On CTC rides I have noticed that they just pile bikes on top of each other so if you're the bottom bike you're probably not going to need to worry about a lock. Anyway I digress - on the rare occassion I go into town or to Tesco on the bike I take my Mini-Magnum D-lock with cable. It's quite hefty though.

Incidentally, all of the Halfords round by me have got a dump bin full of old stock cable locks and d-locks of all sizes and shapes reduced - mostly half price or thereabouts. I think they're changing the range over to Magnums and getting rid of the own branded stuff.

I bought a key locked sold secure bronze rated one, wouldn't use it as a main lock but good for use for trips to the paper shop or as a secondary lock to wrap round front wheel or panniers, reduced from £30 down to £10.
