Delighted by a notice pinned to one of the trees in a local wood where I walk the hound, saying that the council will be clearing up some fallen trees and otherwise giving the place a bit of a spring clean, bringing in heavy horses to do all the hauling, on account of they're the best way to do the work without damaging the natural habitat. Fantastic!

Majestic animals. Which wood, which council? I'd love to come up and watch.

It's a fantastic little bit of woodland near me that's somehow survived the industrial revolution and all the rest of it, against all the odds. Keep it to yourself...Queen's Wood. It's all kicking off in January apparently. I'll post pics if & when I see them in action.

I just found a nice 2009 youtube vid of this being done in a Welsh woodland. They've made an educational day of it. Perhaps your council should do the same? Wish I could see it too.

Bit disappointing to see councils clearing woodland of fallen trees. They are invaluable sources of food and nest sites for a very wide range of birds, animals, insects and funghi

I would imagine that if they are going to the trouble of using heavy horses, they'll have an idea about the environmental management, and won't be stripping out everything dead.
