Can anyone help provide me with some information regarding the ride on the 26th July?

I have been commuting to work for a while, this is only an 18 mile round trip. im not the fittest cyclist out there, indeed I could do with shedding a few pounds, is this a hard ride? (i.e hills?) how long is the average time for a newbie to cycle?

any other info appreciated

I've done this one a number of times; it's relatively flat with no real hills on the ride, a couple of short sharp drags more than anything. There is a slight hill between Elmdon and Ickelton approximately 10-12 miles before the end and then it’s like a pancake into the finish in Cambridge.

I would think you can do it without too much problem, if you're commuting 18 miles a day. You could always try a couple of longer runs at a week-end and see how you get on, I think if you can do 25 relatively easily, you’ll do the ride with no problems.

What would you take to eat n drink? Drink on the go? Would a litre of juice be ok? bar or two of flap jack?

There are a couple of drink stops on the way, I think the longest gap is around 10 miles or so, you might get there without carrying anything if you stopped for drinks. I would normally carry a couple of bottles of juice/water mix, which you could then top up as required on route and a couple of flap jacks.

The ride also goes through Clavering, where Jamie Olivers parents run their pub, I’m sure in 1998 he was outside the pub cooking the bacon sandwiches.

Of course you also have to award yourself with a beer when you get to Cambridge to celebrate completing the course and also to replace the fluid you’ve lost through perspiration.

Not really sure,I seem to be having trouble with hiills and my fitness at the moment.Perhaps a solo ride to Sarfend would suit better.
