Also used to watch it when it was on Channel 4, and went to see it live last time it was at the Royal Albert Hall. Was a really good spectacle. That was back in 1991 apparently.
It's on at the Royal Albert Hall again this time as well. I work for a Japanese company in London and they had a prize draw among the staff for some top level tickets to one of the nights. Unfortunately I didn't win

I’m watching it now on iPlayer, I don’t understand it, there seems to be lots of strutting about throwing resin stuff bowing then one chucks the other out of the ring. I’m sure I will get the hang of it soon though.

On a more serious note the blubber on British sumo lookalikes in Leicester isn't quite the same as the real deal. They're big but there's real muscle there too and they're fitter than their size indicates i reckon.

How long do you think you could last against one of them? I bet one hit most of us would be in the audience in seconds!

Watched the first show last night and loved it. It's as much about the ritual and spectacle as it is the very brief bouts.

Although part of me wonders if when they were doing their little circle ring walk they were having an internal smirk and thinking,

"Can you believe we've convinced these idiots to buy into this?!"

I particularly like the story of Arata who was going places until the Ukraine conflict kicked off and was taken in by a Japanese family so he could continue.

After reading about it a bit more, I'm leaving it, but goddamn I couldn't have been more wrong about that whole "buying into it thing". These guys do and in a big way. It's pretty much being a gladiator!
