London to Gibraltar Sept 2011 "Clock to Rock"

Dear all,

the British Heart Foundation are in their 50th year this year and are organising (via Classic Tours) a London to Gibraltar bike ride in September. Its a fully supported event with a minimum sponsorship amount to raise.

They have some amazing research currently looking at 'Mending broken heart' or finding ways to regenerate damaged cardiac muscle which could revolutionise health for an awful lot of people. Its our biggest killer in the UK, bigger than cancer and all the others so theres no better time to help them raise some funds and enjoy what should be an incredible bike ride at the same time.

I love the sound of so many of these charities rides, and as someone that needs motivation to do most things I think they're a great idea.... But why does the minimum sponsorship have to be so high? £6k is a fair chunk of money! Surely having more participants and a lower sponsorship demand would bring in he same total funds and make the event much more impressive as there would be more riders....

I don't know how you'd raise 6k. I'm sure getting shut of a minimum sponsorship amount would raise them more?

Or do it with no cause, i will be cycling portsmouth to Gibraltar purely for myself, and my own achievement, no sponsorship.
Just because i think it can be done, and is just a bit longer than going to john o'groats, better weather mind you.

Nice one delport, I rode Portsmouth (St Malo) to Faro Algarve under my own steam many moons ago, enjoy!

I'm not sure where I stand on these corporate "challenges". I'm happy to support the charity, and as long as the participant states they are covering their own costs then great, but the £199 entrance fee for this event must be being subsidised with sponsorship. I'd feel I was paying for someone to have a holiday rather than supporting a good cause. But I am a twisted cynic.

The BHF have postponed their ride due to lack of people signing up. i suspect £6k was too much for most.

We are going anyway. 6 of us now, we have paid our own way and raised £12,000 for the BHF anyway. All of the £12k will go to the charity. its not a subsidised holiday. in fact at 110 miles/day it will be no holiday at all. It was bloody hard work to raise this amount but we did it.

Its perfectly possible to raise whatever amount you need to for these events its just a case of committing yourself to doing it and its a personal decision if you want to raise more to offset your own costs.
