I had no idea where else could I post it, so here it goes.

I have a theoretical pickle regarding travelling with Oyster on the London tube.

Say, I swipe my Oyster and get on the tube at station A, then travel to station B (let's say it's 25 min ride), cross the platform and get on the train back to station A, get off after another 25mins and swipe my Oyster at the exit. I did not swipe at station B.

How much would I be charger?

Maximum that Oyster charges is one-day Travelcard price.

Thanks, but there is nothing about touching in and out at the same station, nor time limits between the touches.
I know if I do it within one minute, it charges about 1 quid. How long is this time frame, though?

I'm pretty sure it charges you maximum fare dependent on station and time either 4 or 6 quid - why?

There are tables of maximum journey times.

I'd assume if you touch in and out at the same station without touching out/in elsewhere and you do it within a suitable time it'll assume you've made a single journey within that zone and charge you for that. Tube journey on Oyster in zone 1 is £1.80.

Not sure what the reason for the question is....? The Oyster system will be set up on the (not unreasonable) principle that if you go through the barriers you intend to travel.

The tables you mention are for touching in/out at different stations. I am not sure it would apply in this case.

The question is of purely academic nature. I just wonder how exactly they work this out.

They allow 90 mins for a journey in zone 1 to 2. If you touch in/out at a zone 1 station within that time it can only assume one of two things: that you've done a £1.80 journey or, you've been gawd knows where and back and ching a maximum fare. You could always try it!!

Depends on the time of day and zones used. If it is in peak time you will be charged 2 maximum fares of £6 each. Outside of the peak you will be charged 2 maximum fares of £4.30 each. The solution to avoid this is to touch out at station B and then touch back in at station B and then touch out at station A. If this is in zone 1 you will be charged £1.80 each way other zones have different prices for example zones 2-3 would be £1.30 each way. (I work for LUL)

I dont know the answer to your question, but there is a time limit as I have had that on mine where it charged twice.

I would expect it to charge for the zone you are in minimum and if you exceed their time out than the maximum journey cost from that zone

edit actually looking at dom's link posted, it has everything there about limits if you scroll down..

depends what zone you are in. I would expect it to be a single zone charge. Best call them up!

Sounds reasonable.
By the way, since we are on the subject, what is the minimum Oyster balance to open the gate at a station?

Why did they name it East London line, anyway? Are they predicting poles shifting to the equator?

Minimum amount you need on your card is £1.80 for zone 1 and £1.30 for other zones, but you may incur a negative balance if you don't have enough on the card for that particular journey.
