Some £1.3bn is needed to tackle the half a million potholes that blight London's roads, industry experts warn. The Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) said on average there was a pothole in London every 36 yards, causing traffic congestion and increased pollution.
In its annual report, the AIA said it would take more than 10 years to bring the city's roads up to scatch

That's nothing, look what we have to put up with in Manchester http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8025954.stm

It's going to take a while to fix that one!!

And there are 10000 holes in Blackburn Lancashire ...

Seriously though, I thought the choice of words was curious. I'd suggest that there are worse effects from potholes than "congestion and increased pollution" - like the flat spot on my back rim, for one.

Old Kent Road is the worst road I know for pot holes and poorly maintained road surface. Shakes my bike to pieces riding along there.

I'll second that, I reckon Thurston Road/Brookmill Road have to be worse than the ones you've mentioned though - it's like going into crater alley through there!

Brookmill Road is horrendous. Right by the bustop in the direction of Deptford.
They are digging up part of the road at the mo, so hopefully part of it will have a nicer surface

Am I missing something here, £1.3Bn for 500,000 potholes, that is £2,600 per pothole. Some will require more work than others but lets assume an average of 5 potholes a day for a 2 man team. £13,000 / day - where can I buy van and some tarmac?

From the Asphalt Industry Alliance, who did the study. Something tells me they might be a little biased...

I Agree - horrid road. The roads are in a state ;) even the Cable st. cycle lane is pretty bumpy...

LOL good spot, I think I am in the wrong business. I mean how hard can it be to lay a bit of tarmac!!

Actually looking at the botched jobs that normally get done it's seems like it's really hard!!!

And don't get me started on the job the local contractors do around here when they resurface in colour a bus lane or cycle lane. Scandalous.

I am probably opening up a can of worms here, so I will just make my comment and depart.

When I cycled from my home to the Good Friday track racing in Herne Hill recently I felt that the road surfaces got appreciably worse when I got across the river. Maybe it's because I don't cycle in South London very often and so apart from everything else I was having to negotiate my way around unfamiliar potholes.

Or maybe it is because South London is a strange and undeveloped land compared to the wonderful North London with its superior road surfaces??? ;)

As I said, I'll leave now. xx(

I think it depends on the borough. 90% of my cycling is where I live and work -- Wandsworth and Richmond (south of the river, for the geographically challenged!). Both seem pretty good, but if I go over the river (Hammersmith and Fulham) the roads are awful, until I get to Kensington and Chelsea, when they're OK again (except the main roads are awful here).

Knowing the roads makes a big difference too.
