It's a bit more complicated than that...

Use http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/. I've had good results, including a proper repair of a section of road (corner of Gray's Inn Road and Holborn) that was a slumped disaster for year.

Borough High Street, due to I don't know what. I thought northbound was bad until I tried riding it southbound: you could not make a better case for full-sus road bikes than commuting along that road

That, along with Town Mead Road in Parsons Green.

Yep, Borough Highstreet is deeply unpleasent in both directions, but for sheer deepness if not frequencey of potholes the south bound bus lane on the main road through Kennington and Stockwell takes the biscuit......it's not a case of avoiding them for comfort, more for maintaining forward motion.

Would a MTB be the preferred choice of steed?

Well I made some videos on Southampton's problems quite some time back:

Not the best videos... I will make better later.

Depends upon your Council really. I've reported poorly patched potholes through fixmystreet and within hours the Council came back to me, and advised the matter was being forwarded to the right person. Pity nothing was ever done about it.

The problem I think Councils have is that fixing potholes properly is rather expensive. It's £65 to patch them - but they'll come back the following year. I wouldn't be surprised if the thousands of pounds per hole quoted was more accurate.

I reckon to do a half decent job the road would need to be relaid, with better drainage and better foundations, and all of the inconvenience to commuters and local residents that would bring. Naturally they can't do the whole road network at once either and when they do justification of the kind of budget required will be difficult in the face of a £65 patch job.

It is a little more expensive than 65 quid as its not always a simple fill-in. One guy more in the know told me it was more like 150-200 per square foot.

Southampton CC has been trying out the Rhinopatch, have a look on youtube - I think this is the way it will go for smaller holes and seems a lot more cost effective and long lasting.

From the Asphalt Industry Alliance, who did the study. Something tells me they might be a little biased...
perhaps the Asphalt Industry Alliance might care to tell us why the overcoating of roads has been de-laminating after less than a year (cue cold winter/wrong type of snow excuses). Somebody, somewhere has got the specification horribly wrong, and it's a recent thing. A lot of last year's overcoating is simply coming off.

I'd agree with srw - the fill that hole site run by the CTC is damned effective - because the CTC keeps tabs on which council's do the work and which don't.

Old Kent Road is the worst road I know for pot holes and poorly maintained road surface. Shakes my bike to pieces riding along there.

+1 especially with the contraflows on at the moment. I;ve given up dodging the potholes. Just ride through them now.

Pet hate of mine at the mo are those speed bumps with the cobble stone edging
It's like hitting a mini half inch kerb stone!
