How do you know if have a long cage or short cage derailer

If you have two ring at the front it is probable a short cage on the rear, if you have a triple then you will have a long cage on the rear. Does that help?

Unless you have a large cassette, in which case you may well have a long, or a medium. One of my bikes has a double and bash and an 11-34 cassette so runs with a medium cage.

I have a triple headset and a 8 sprocket cassette.
I will look @ the mech tomorrow.

This is a Long Cage.

And this is a Short Cage.

The long cage is for cassette with wide ratio of cogs, usually a MTB or tourer and short cage on road/racer with narrower range of gears.

On Shimano road mechs::

SS is Short Cage
GS is Medium Cage

I think all Shimano's MTB mechs are classed as Long Cage (could be wrong about that).

With a triple you are unlikely to have a Short cage

Shimano MTB mechs (SLX as an example) come in GS medium and SGS Long cage. There are loads of double ring MTB chainsets out there these days, and you only need medium for a 36-22 double and bash over an 11-34 cassette.
