Long or short... Values

I need some tubes but... the cheapo ones I use are 48mm which are spot on but you cant get decent ones this size and conti only do 42 or 60mm, I have 26mm rims on one bike and around 20 on t'other... So long or short values???

To answer a question with a question, how much do the existing ones stick out and will your pump fit if the valve is 6mm shorter (and fit when deflated and you actually need to put air in...)?

42mm should be fine, I used them on a wheel with a 30mm rim, there's still enough valve exposed to attach the pump to.
