I am sure most of us have headed off only to realise a few minutes later that we have left something behind; phone, keys or whatever and then gone back to get. This morning I did this and left a laptop at home. I did not realise until I got to work. Oh great, no point going in without it so off home I go, collect laptop and go back to work. An extra 25 miles to my morning commute.

Anyone else done something similar? Also, what is the largest item you have managed to forget?

Complete change of clothes for the day, only realised when I got to work.
Rather than a further 22 mile round trip, I chose to go to M & S, Edgware Road (which conveniently opens at 8am) to buy a complete outfit for the day.

I remember leaving my travelcard and keys, this office was not close to the train station and could only be reached by car or bike. I wasnt well enough to cycle at this point so had to wait at train station for another hour and a half for a colleague to drop the keys and card off! Sometimes forget to pack bits of clothing or take my lunch but no big items

Not on a commute, but I did drive from Swindon to Heathrow only to find I'd left my passport at home... Never driven so fast along the M4 before or since!

Not a commute, but I left Castleton in the Peaks heading west to Chapel en le frith. It was only as I reached the top of Winnats Pass that I realised I had left my pump in a cafe back in the town. Doh! Only one thing for it.
The second time up Winnats I had to get off half way up and walk :¬)

Once got almost all the way home from work when I decided to stop off and do a bit of shopping. So I stopped, pushed my bike to a stand, went to get the lock out of my backpack and realised I'd left behind ........ my backpack

Forgot a security access card and wallet.. went back after already arriving at work. 18 miles in total that morning, ended up being docked 30 minutes wage for being 5 minutes late. The next time it happens I'd be more inclined to phone in "sick". After all that effort and all.

I was knackered when I got home yesterday. It was not until I had put the bike away that I looked at the mileage for the day and it was 49.6 miles and I kicked myself for not checking it before and then going round the block a couple of times to get it over 50

That is the longest I have ridden in one day and the 37 ish in the morning was the longest "single" ride. Hats off to you guys that put in those sort of miles everyday!

I arrived home sans panniers once, so in other words - I had lost everything! Clothes, wallet, keys, laptop, lights, phone... problem was I knew I put them on the bike when I left work; they had fallen off.

Turned around, set off scanning the road all the way and found them where some kind soul had picked them up and draped them over the fence, out of the muck and rain.

I was nearly an hour and half late and after doing 36 miles was not in really much good in the lab till after lunch. I am a project manager so have not lost any wages, nor would I do that to anyone else. I think its better to have staff loyalty/interest than trying to squeeze every last drop of time out of people. Managerial practice in this country sucks; too many managers and very little tallent among them.

Thats what I moaned about to the boss. He's on flexi, I'm on rota. I'd just put the effort in, and given that I often stayed on in my own time to help out regualrly some 10 minutes past my time I thought he'd be a little more flexible. He wasnt.

Since the new management people wont stay on or put in extra effort. Its gone to s*** and the bosses are begging us to "help out" as they're now losing money. I kind of feel they've created this situation though....

....ANYWAY
Back on topic!

@MossCommuter! Thats quite nice that someone did that. It shows that some people care. I have seen a step ladder fall out of a van a couple of weeks back. Shouted out to the guy that his side door was open but he just drove off. So I picked it up and propped it against someones fence where he might see it if he returned.

I tend to prefer the locking bags now just for that reason.

The worst one was getting home after a 25 mile commute to find I'd left my house keys back in the office. I couldn't believe it and seriously considered just smashing a window and breaking in. But I didn't want to leave the house in that state for the next day while I was back at work. So I dumped my bag of work clothes on the front step and headed back, adding another 50miles to a busy day. I drove into work the next day!

Now I always have a spare key hidden somewhere in the garden just in case.
