Forgive me if this has been asked before as I haven't searched to see but.......what sort of distances does everyone commute and who is the longest? I would love to commute by bike but my work is 35 miles each way so for me not possible.

As far as I've seen from other threads some go as far as 20 miles each way.

I do 3 1/2 miles each way to college. Not too bad but I wished I could extend it to do more but college has no showers I can use (that I know of).

Currently, I commute 3/4 of a mile, LOL. I'm betting that's the shortest commute of anyone here.

Our family made a decision a few years back to always live as close as possible to work, school, shopping etc. Personally, I think anyone who commutes more than a few miles is nuts, but that's just me. Spending more than an hour a day on the bike to get to work would drive me crazy - but at least I'd be on a bike. Spending even a fraction of that time in a car would be completely unacceptable - I don't know how people can stand an hour's commute by car - I'd have to change jobs or move closer to work.

In between here and there
Due to a road flooding I am running @ 16.5 each way, normally 14.8. I enjoy it. By car it takes me 30 mins avg by bike 56-60 minutes. On the 1st of June I would have been doing it each way for 12 months. Not 100% 5 days a week had to build up to that.

Why dont you just walk , .75 of a mile is not worth gettting the bike out , my commute is 10 mies each way and takes anywhere from 32 to 40 minutes depending on how much i am carrying , weather and how the legs feel.
Plenty of people do commute a lot further .

34 mile round trip.
20 miles in, 14 miles back.

(Door to door route is just over 12 miles each way, but that's not enough)

Presently 15 each way, longest I have done when there was a slight change in road closure etc was 19 each way
I have always thought that 20 would be my limit each way, which would be a good hour

27 miles a day (round trip) for me. When the mood takes me I extend either the run in, or the run home, sometimes both...

5.5 miles each way
I can extend it to much longer if needed
BUT - it is also runable via tracks and trails almost from door to door - so sometimes I bike it and run back

Bike-train-bike will still save you money :-)

Walking takes 15 minutes, biking takes 5 and uses up 1/3 of the energy of walking. Cycling is faster, uses up less energy and is more fun. I know because I did the math. ^_^

Getting the bike out takes a minute. If the destination is more than a hundred yards away, it's always worth getting the bike out.

During the summer, I do 60 km with 700 m climbs going to work; and 10 km going home. In old money, that's 43 miles. The morning ride takes about 1:40. I do this every day except Friday, when I work from home.
The only trouble is the vast quantity of food I eat--but hey, it's fun!

Cal44,

I posted a similar question in December, when my daily commute more than doubled to 48 miles return.

This was impractical for me due to the time that it added to each end of the day, some of which were 10 hour shifts + commute time + cooling down/shower time = little time for family life.

One of the best bits of advice I was given back then, wasn't really suitable for my circumstances, but may work for you; and that was a split commute.

This could be driving in to work with the bike in the car, cycle home, cycle back to work the following day and drive home - OR - daily part car/public transport and part bike.

I've ended up using the bike only occasionally and that tends to be at the end of each shift pattern, going into rest days.

I do a 10 mile round trip. I occasionally extend it, but not often, because I've got parental responsibilites at home.
