Looked at the hills I had problems with in the 80's and 90's

I used to cycle in several periods, especiall between 1980 and 1992.
I would never walk up a hill, but felt a bit defeated if I had to stop for a while

I was doing a lot of bird watching, so sometimes had gear on the bike

Two hills in particular caused problems. I could never get up them in one go.

One was in Guildford, the road called Pewley Hill which led to Pewley Down
The other was on the Isle of Portland, the steep road which led up to POrtland Heights Hotel

I checked these on the nice mapping sites we have available these days. Both are in the region of 25% at steepest
No wonder I had problems

Road bikes tended to have higher gearing back then which wouldnt have helped. If I stop half way up a hill its to flick a bit of glass off my tyre or investigate a strange bike noise.

Never because Im knackered of course.^_^
