Any fakenger in Londonton is fair game as far as I am concerned..for me it's like a red rag to a bull :becool:
See this is where you have to make the distinction between a fixed rider & a fixie rider... 2 letters make for a big difference on the road.

Whatever....

Anyway.. back on topic.... new commute bike for the OP.....
Forget cross bikes... too heavy. I tried a Spesh TriCross but instead went for the Secteur.

I wouldn't have thought a cross bike would feel heavy to the OP after his Ridgeback, but I agree it would feel heavy next to an out and out road bike. I had a Focus Mares AX1.0 when the 2011 model came out. It was a cracking bike, and another one I wish I'd never sold. I ended up with Durano+ tyres on it and it was a great commuting bike. What I would say though is that canti brakes are bobbins. Decent pads and a proper set up helped, but they still weren't great.

Back on topic... nice

The Whyte isn't heavy IMHO – it felt positively featherweight to me! (although it is apparently 9.8kg)... Like I said above, I like the idea of a proper road bike, but think disc brakes are the most sensible choice for all-season commuting, not least because I've worn out 2 sets of pads and appear to be eating my rims in less than 6 months/2000 miles.

Thanks smokeysmoo  I spotted the Focus Mares AX4.0 at the LBS which had discs... again it had the "stealthy" understated look though that I'm not sold on (yet). Interesting that you said canti brakes weren't great even when properly set up – reinforces my desire for discs I think.

I'd be looking at CX bikes with disc brakes or similar with a flat bar (more choice) if rain is a problem. I owned a Boardman Hybrid (the top of the range model) for a while & it was a nice commute bike.
Rain is not so much a problem, more a fact of life round here ^_^, but I think I'd like to go for drops – even if that means restricting the choice.
