I am looking to purchase a hybrid bike as part of our companies Cycle2Work scheme.

I am 5'9" and looking for the best bike I can get for around £500.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
John

:welcome: I personally like the Ridgebacks, I'd also say avoid front suspension in that price bracket and go for CrMo forks rather than aluminium.

Just to follow up, my work scheme is through Halfords but I understand they can provide other bikes, was looking at Boardmans originally, but also like the Specialized and Scott bikes.

On their c2w site there is a list of brands and a phone number. There are also independents that take the halfords voucher. Best bike is one that fits, is comfortable, meets your needs, is enjoyable to ride and makes you smile

There is a lot of competition at this price point. The Boardman bikes have a particularly good finish. There is a rather depressing fad at the moment for all matt black which can be a bit monotonous and boring, so try to choose something in a rather more cheerful colour! Avoid the front suspension as previously stated. Most bikes will have a similar spec for a given price. Perhaps put a few of your choices on here with a link and then people can comment.

Oh, and narrower tyres will feel faster on the road.

I got a Specialized Sirrus Elite 2 months a go on the C2W scheme, It was £550 tho, I love it ! Lightweight, looks nice, fast and smooth, I recommend giving this bike a test run if you have the chance of getting it.

Your best advice will come from your body, trust me on this one. Go out and test ride the bikes you're interested and even a few you weren't initially interested in... you may be pleasantly surprise. I was.

Don't be afraid to try some that aren't the "common hybrid" as well. You know what you want out of a bike even if you don't think you do. When you test ride the "right one" you will know, your body will tell you. Hybrids at £500 are very competitive and components and frames will be very similar from brand to brand.

Test ride, test ride and test ride. Cover all your basis and you will be happy with your choice.

Having been in a similar situation recently, I settled on the Boardman Hybrid Comp.

For the price you won't get a bike with better specs, plus it comes with the smooth welded frame.
