As long as I breathe, I attack.
Mini ck 1 is 18 years old and in the next 1-2 years will need a kidney donation due to a defect they were born with that has progressed to the stage where we are looking at dialysis before x mas this year if the level of function declines at its current rate.
How to go about finding a donor ? we have a very small family circle so have limited options for family members that might be a potential match , of course i would give mine if im a match but as im nearly 60 the chances are my kidney would need replacing sooner or later .

Surely your hospital will sort this?

Fellow Leukaemia sufferers have their bone marrow transplants sorted by specialist hospital departments in Manchester, Leeds and Guys (London), etc.

They tap into a Europe-wide database. I hope the same thing applies for your daughter.

I hope you have success soon. I sympathise with the agony of your situation following the awful year we (my wife & I) had in 2025.

Good luck & a big hug for Mini CK.

I'm really sorry to hear that, @cyberknight.

That is a similar situation to that which a good friend of mine was in. He ended up on dialysis for a couple of years and then his father donated a kidney to him. I think his dad was aged 70-75 and my friend was in his mid-40s then. The transplant lasted nearly 15 years. My friend did eventually die but he had 14 good years after the operation.

Some transplants last 25+ years. Hopefully, that will be the case for mini CK 1 once she has had her transplant - good luck to you and your family.

The hospital will do a lot of the leg walk. You can and are free to do so to do your on public appeal. If that’s something you feel is an option. My advice would be to speck to her specialist Nurse. They can’t do it for you but can talk you though it, help you understand the pit falls.

We wondered about the donation route when my daughter suffered total renal failure aged 5. In fact it's 11 years ago to the week that she was having emergency surgeries and was plumbed into a continuous dialysis machine. Thankfully her condition was only "acute" so today her own kidneys are working reasonably well.
Suggest you contact mini-CK's nephrology team to discuss the donor & transplant process. At your age you should still be able to donate. Doesn't matter if you're not compatible, because the NHS have a pairing scheme to find a compatible family to do "swapsies" with.

Best of luck to miniCK1, and to you and the rest of your family; will be thinking of you.

You can ask your family/relatives if any of them would consider donating their kidney to your daughter.
If you choose a deceased donor's kidney all you need to do is basically to wait. Your daughter will have to do some tests and she will be put on the waiting list. Now the waiting times (depending on various websites) can be 3 - 6 years.
If you choose living donor - same stuff like various tests will be done for mini ck1 and the donor BUT the waiting time (according to various kidney charities websites) is about 6 months only.
I do not know if there's an age limit for a living donor. Next time you will see kidney specialist - ask all the questions you can think of.
I have already let my doctor know that when I will need a transplant the only option will be deceased donor and that fact already is on my file.
Also I recommend to read the following websites: kidneycareuk.org, kidney.org, mayoclinic.org, kidney.org.uk. USA-based websites also have loads of interesting info.

When one of my friends had a kidney transplant it came from an unknown donor (I presume recently deceased). I don't recall any call out to family members to donate one... she just waited on a list whilst having dialysis.
