I've just handed my trusted Carrera over to a mate from work who is just trying to get into cycling. I originally considered keeping it as a winter bike as my new bike didn't seem to handle the winter roads round here very well. It left me with a bit of a space in the garage that requires filling and I did think about another new bike but thought a good second hand bike might be better. I found a few different ones on gumtree, and was wondering what anyone thought of my shortlist. I assume I can post links from that site?

Looks good too, but a bit far away when there's some more local to me. I did see a Ribble very similar advertised in my area but discounted it for no other reason than perceived value for money compared to the above list.

Will any of the bikes you've linked take proper full size mudguards with say a 28mm tyre? A must for a winter bike imo. I'd look at a CX/gravel type bike perhaps as a winter ride rather than a sporty roadbike of the types you've linked. Fatter tyres, mudguards etc. Look for a Genesis Croix de fer, Pinnacle Arkose or similar

It's difficult to tell from available information but the Trek already has a front mudguard fitted. I thought about a gravel bike but I rarely do anything that's not on road but I suppose winter roads can be a bit rougher.

Why can't you use your existing bike?
I could, but I had a bit of hassle with the brakes sticking due to salt on the exposed actuating arm last winter when it was only a few weeks old. I didn't think it boded well for a full winter.

I did see a Croix de fer. I'll have another look.
