My lbs set me up with the legal requirment of a white reflector on the front of my new bike - mounted on my handlebars. Of course, I want the front lights up there.

I have tried to find a white reflector which mounts through the brake mount through the forks but can't find on eBay or Wiggle. Has anyone seen anything elsewhere? I don't want to do without as I do beleive the reflector does make a difference at night.

I've used the reflector from the handlebars and attached that to the front forks. The plastic mount is flexible enough to go around the forks and there is plenty of clearance on the wheel (the reflector is now sideways, so maybe not as effective?). I doubt this would work if you've got suspension forks though as they tend to be a bit thicker....

Front reflectors are waste of time IMO - but if you want one Zippy, I've probably got one on a fork crown mount kicking around the garage. I never seem to throw anything away... PM me your address and I'll have a look.

A white front reflector isn't actually a legal requirement in use. You can remove if you want. See here : http://www.ctc.org.u...aspx?tabid=4071

Thanks RichK. I notice that link also says that pedal reflectors are a requirement, but what about SPDs? I put yellow reflector bands around my ankles but they are not the amber reflectors mentioned there.

I do feel nervous taking off a white reflector; although where it is at the moment partially obscures one of my headlights so that is definitely no good!

Don't worry about reflectors. No one else does, especially the old bill. You will find no one who would have been pulled up for not having reflectors. If they where, then it was probably because they were cycling ninja style like an arse.

^^ and if you get done for no reflectors on SPDs I'll go halves on your fine!

I agree - having said that I nearly landed a ninja cyclist on my bonnet recently; the only reason I didn't is because I saw his pedal reflectors moving up and down as I approached! He didn't even have a red reflector.

perhaps the ninja should get some lights

the first thing I do with a new bike is remove ALL reflectors (and the pie plate; and the size sticker, the BS.... sticker and the Made in .... thousands of miles away sticker)

all above mentioned items go straight in the bin - I can't even bear to leave them in the shed!

I hate wheel reflectors the most, followed by the front reflector, then pedal reflectors and finally the rear reflector (which I could almost be talked into leaving on.....actually, no I couldn't).

Excuse my ignorance and perhaps, naivety, but I have a question regarding lights (even after reading the link posted above^^).

I have BS compliant front and rear lights (CatEye - the rear points to both sides as well as back) and also have a green 3 LED light on the front and a 3 red LED light on the back (RAC branded and sold as bike lights, so they should be OK, right?).

My question - Can I have the 2 smaller led lights on flash as they compliment the 2 main lights and remain legal or do they have to be or 'solid state'? Also, I have no reflectors and SPD pedals but wear Hi-viz vest and have a reflective sticker on the rear of my helmet. Maybe overkill, but on country lanes I don't want to take any chances.

The only time you don't need pedal reflectors is when you bike is older than 1985....so that means that I'm OK. To say that you don't need them because the Police don't care (or even know) is not sensible - you'll be guaranteed to find the one that does.

Here are some guidelines

Put the LEDs on flash, not a problem as far as the law is concerned. In fact, if the Cateyes flash, and you don't need them to light up the road, put them on flash as well. Nothing shouts "Cyclist" as much as a decent set of flashing lights.

Does the Hi-Viz vest have reflectice strips? If not, splash out on one that does, but the most effective of all is reflective material on your legs/shoes/feet, as the movement catches the light better.

And as I said, because I have endorsed advice which is not strictly within the law, but is neverthelss sensible "get yourself seen " advice, and you do manage to find the only police officer petty enough to check for BS marks on a well lit cyclist, I will pay half the fine.

Even the website you link to says the chances of finding a cop who knows the ins and outs are pretty slim.!
