Hi, I'm looking to find an expert witness in regards to bicycles and metals.
Basically I need a bike looking at and a report done saying why it failed in court complaint format.
Anyone help.

Why don't you explain your gripe on here? There are loads of experienced cyclists who will be able to tell you whether you're wasting your time or not.

Most of the time, if you're contemplating civil action against a manufacturer you are looking at wasting a pile of money with not a snowflake's chance in Hell of any recourse. Litigation is a risky and potentially ruinous game unless you're very very sure indeed of your case.

Specialist cycling solicitors should know who to go to.

One way I sometimes source suitable experts is by looking at case reports of similar cases.

In the Love -v- Halfords case for the Claimant, Dr John Morgan, a senior lecturer for 30 years at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Bristol and For the defendant Dr P.S.J Crofton, senior tutor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Imperial College London were retained.

You are quite correct. I have been involved in several commercial litigations in the past. It never goes to plan, always costs twice as much as was estimated. It usually boils down to who has the deepest pockets to maintain their position. That being the case, the big boy nearly always wins. I'd look for some commercial settlement and move on, almost regardless of the circumstances

To sum up very quickly, by bottom bracket snapped. After inspection we found it was a two stage fracture, the first stage fracture(the cause) we ar struggling to see how this happened as it would have taken a high energy impact to fracture the shaft the kind of energy to say if this happened while the part was fitted the bike would have been destroyed.
So I could do with an expert to examine the part.

How much is the bike worth?
As said above it will cost you £1,000's to get a forensic expert to examine it.
I have done a few of these through work, getting metalurgists to examine and rule on weld failures. They use dye pen techniques and very high powered microscopes, to examine the graines of the metal to asecrtain how and why the material failed. The report will have to be drafted in expert witness format which will also be costly.
You could try your local University to see if there is a PHD student in the metalurgy department who wants to look at it, and has access to the equipment?

Bottom bracket isnt going to cost much to replace. Unless the damage has caused further damage to your bike then personally I would fix it and get some enjoyment out of the bike.

Life is to short for the pile of stress you are inviting.

Please clarify, is it just the bottom bracket component or the actual BB shell in the frame?

I suspect the latter from your OP but your last post is ambiguous, to me anyway ;)

Yes, the bottom bracket shaft snapped not the shell.
