Hi ALL,

Looking for some general advice.

Iv looked on line, and while all the repair stands seem to do the same thing, some are as cheap as £40 while others head in to the £100s

Is there anything particular I should be thinking about when looking to buy one, is there any technical reason to spend £100s over say £50?

Im looking to do basic repairs on an occasional basis (fixing gears/changing wheels ect...) could I get away with a cheap stand?

cheers!

Generally, more expensive means more stable and more stable means better. That's not to say that there aren't some good stands out there without stretching to the £100s (I got mine from £70 from Decathalon) but, when you go down to the very bottom end, they don't hold the bike well or they wobble about or they aren't height adjustable or they are very heavy or they have narrow clamp heads which could damage fragile tubes.

You should also think about storage. With mine, the two front legs unbolt easily, making it very simple to store even though it's not foldable. However, we generally leave it out as the legs go between the wheels if we park the car in the garage and the height will hold the bike above the car's bonnet, so I can leave a bike on the stand if I'm working on something which takes a bit longer.

I guess you could turn that around and say that, IMO, you should look for a stand which is at a minimum height adjustable, will clamp securely to the top tube or seat post, it is stable and you can store it easily.

I bought a £38 stand off ebay last week for much the same reasons as you, reckon it will do all i need it to, i.e hold the bike off the floor for fettling gears etc. Seems ok to me, doesn't have a quick release.....but i'm not fettling several bikes a day as a shop/pro might. Nice and steady and seems quite well made
I'm sure others will chip in.

Cyclesurgery are doing one of the Feedback Sports stands for about 75 quid at the mo - it's a fairly simply stand but with what's probably quite a decent clamp head, if the stand I've got is anything to go by (admittedly I've got one of the flashier ones - tho' I didn't pay anything like the current price for it ! )

I'm surprised Lidl do not have the £30 one again. They sold out double quick and looked better than the Aldi offering.

I've also got the Decathlon heavy duty one as well. Link. For £50, can't fault it.

I bought a Feedback Sports "Sport Mechanic" stand a couple of months ago and it's been superb.

It's very stable in use and the only small criticism is that I had to buy a tool tray for it seperately, but I guess they're producing these things to make a profit.

I got a revolution one from Edinburgh cycle co-op on special offer, I am very impressed with the quality. I have never used any other, so I can't compare, but I love mine...
