So is there any peeople out ther with young kids School age that have gone from 2 cars to a 1 car family ?

Just wondering how practical it would be losing my car bearing in mind we have a 4 and 1 year old.
2 days per week I have to get 4 year old to school and 1 year old to carers. Carers live 1.5 miles away. School is another 4 miles away.

Just wondering on Winter, Rain, Kids, etc

How about taking them on a bike...would that work...or do you need to take them both at the same time?

I have a 5.5 year old at School, and a 2 year old at Nursery. My Wife drops them off in the morning, and I pick them up at night... however the after School club is just a 10 min walk, and the Nursery is at the end of our street, so not too much hassle.

I have picked them up in the bike trailer and gone for a ride with them when I've needed to pick up a small eBay win / drop the eldest off at Rainbows (like Brownies, but for younger kids) and it has been fairly painless... not so sure I'd like to go 4 odd miles with them in the trailer though, especially once the darker nights draw in.

So, in answer to your question... errr, I'll have a pint please.

We've got one car.

No.1 son is in secondary school & busses there (5 maybe six miles).

Daughter's primary school is 5 mins walk away, she walks to school with Mrs. Monkey & the dog.

I get train + bike to work.

I think it's no hardship, but then we've only ever had one car, and (generally) I don't need to take heavy tools or kit to work.

I see a guy where I work with a tandem with a child seat on the back. I've only ever seen him with a child in the seat and the back seat of the tandem empty so I don't know whether he's already dropped another child off before getting here.

I take it your wife takes the car to work. Are there any alternative modes of transport she could use?

Bike?;)

We're just about to drop to one car. 2 kids at primary school a few miles away: Mondays and Tuesdays Mrs-LC works and so I drop the kids off with a neighbour who runs them to school with her kids, and then I tootle off to work on the bike. [Mrs-LC needs car at work as she tends to go out and about in the course of her job].

The rest of the week, Mrs-LC car shares with various of our neighbours that have kids in the same school. They have walked it in a group a few times, but it's a narrow path along a 60mph limit A road for most of the way. Which can be interesting with a group of excited 5-9 year olds. ;)

So one of our cars spends a lot of time sitting on the drive and will shortly be sold to a friend. When my office relocates, and the girls are old enough to be truested on the aforementioned road, there's a possibility I'll be able to escort them to school on their bikes and then go on to work. Fingers crossed. The road's been shut a few times in the past - it'd be nice if that happened again.

In your situation, I guess you're looking at a trailer .. your situation sounds trickier than ours.

I would need a Trailer foldable which I could leave with carers when I drop Child no. 1 off and a rear seat for transporting child no.2 to school.

Mine folds down to a resonable size. Got it from Costco, about 65 squid IIRC. Don't know if they all do though.

We went from 2 cars to one 2 years ago now.
In the morning I take my 2 teenagers to school 6 miles away along with 2 other teenagers from a family we car share with.
My younger son goes to a local school that we can cycle to, but it's also en-route to the estate where my wife and I work, so we can either cycle to school and work or drive.

To be honest, even though we're whizzing around with the teenagers social whirl, we've not missed the second car once, just a few seconds extra planning.. There's always the bike, walk or bus for most occasions if needed. The transition was simple.
I commend 1 car 1 family to the house!

I commend it to all the people with space for one on their drive that run two or more and clog up residential streets with the surplus vehicles...
