Yesterday I did something I am totally ashamed of.

...Its that bad a crime that I'm not sure I can call myself a cyclist ever again....

.....for I used the SMALL RING......I'm sorry !!!!!!!!! I will never ever do it again, I just wanted to know what it feels like

If you keep it a secet between him and you then perhaps nobody else will find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey I know this is meant as a joke, but I'd like to humbly suggest that comments like this can alienate those of us who happily use all the gears at our disposal to enjoy our cycling to the full. We're cyclists too - it's not just a big club for racing boys you know.
+1. I flip to the small ring a lot more than I used to. Indeed: I used to have the problem of front mech. seizing up due to lack of use and accumulation of crud. Not any more!

I ride a triple.... and happily use all three rings. :cycle:
On my shopper I recently replaced the double with a compact triple - not because I wanted it, but because it was the cheapest chainset I could get . On that one I can't go to the smallest ring - the rear mech. couldn't handle it - so it's wasted. But one of my road bikes has a triple - and I use it!

I used to cycle in Manchester. There's only one hill there - somewhere between the Jolly Angler and Piccadilly Station.

I even went as far as buying a smaller small ring. swapped my 42 for a 36. I don't know how I got up some inclines on the 42 as I still use bottom gear but now on the 36 :surrender: . I'm just getting old I think  .

It is nothing to be ashamed of gb, the passing of time comes to us all when our legs need a little help with the propulsion of the bike. Did you enjoy it though?;)

Indeed. And if the Lord hadn't intended us to use the little ring, he wouldn't have given it to us.

Okay, okay - I accept the blame - it's all my fault! I made a gentle suggestion to Gaz yesterday that perhaps it wasn't the best idea to do all his climbing in the big ring when he is suffering from a bad back!

(And I forgot to point out to him that it is also probably not good for his bikes, which seem to die with alarming regularity! ;))

I have a sneaking feeling, that in a certain Other Place, a thread of this nature would quickly have turned NSFW by now... ;)
