Arrived in Cairo a couple of days ago on a direct flight from heathrow and BMI have managed to lose one of my suitcases. It contained an old toshiba laptop a nintendo wii and about £500 worth of new clothes for my kids who live in Cairo during school term.

I have reported the loss and been given a reference number etc but if it doesn't turn up what are the rules regarding compensation. I don't use seperate travel insurance.

It turned up 2 days before i was going home...at Gatwick. I told them to send it to my home address...it turned up in Montevideo the day before i came home  Couldnt even get that right

The tracking systems are pretty good nowadys, most luggage seems to turn up unless the label gets ripped off AND the little bar code. The only place that worries me is Nairobi where there's a permanent mountain of lost baggage at one end of the terminal.

Not yet. When I phone BMI to chase it up I always get a call centre in India. I've got the form ready to make a claim against them though.

The Warsaw compensation rates are based on weight and are so small as to be irrelevant.

You definitely need travel insurance to get sensible cover.
