Loud car exhausts (and a general rant about boy racers).

All cars, trucks, motorbikes should be limited to 50 dB. Absolutely no need for noise pollution.

50 dB was a figure plucked from the air but surely to goodness we can make the average car quieter and certainly cut down the noise of the ridiculous baked bean tin exhausts?

I'll admit noise bothers me which is why I've spent the happiest years of my life in the country.

I'll admit that I am a lover of quiet too. When I am on the bike and passed by a car, I find the noise intrusive. But the noise is mainly tyres, engine and some air disturbance. With the vast majority of cars, the exhaust hardly features. What bothers me is not the odd noisy exhaust (cars and motorbikes) which is usually transitory, but the sheer volume of noise caused by heavy traffic, which lasts all day and some of the night and is relentless. No easy solution to that, until we re-think our entire transport strategy.

All depends on personal tolerance and I'd put myself in a 'very tolerant' category. I'm sat on a ship now and it's eerily quiet (to me) as there's not much machinery running - a generator and a few other bits and pieces. You'd probably find even the air from the vent above my head for air conditioning noisy. I don't sleep well for the first couple of nights at home as its too quiet - it usually means somethings wrong when at work. The nature of it has an effect too - I can tune out the generator but at home the cat deciding to pace about the bedroom drives me insane

Has anyone mentioned bumper stickers? You don't see them anymore, but they were around for a few years. Both my favourites were on Porsches. One was: My other car is a Porsche. T'other: The one who's got most toys when he dies wins.
