I had a lovely experience last week when I went in to buy a nice flavoured vinegar (fig and date balsamic vinegar) from a local deli. They couldn't sell me the size bottle I wanted (small) as they hadn't any corks left. I was going to leave it but it was the second time I'd not been able to buy it so instead asked if I could take the bottle with the plastic seal on instead and collect a cork the following week when stocks came in. Yes absolutely fine, then when she tried to fill the jar, they ran out. So she gave me the half bottle for free, and said to come back to buy a full bottle. I thought it was great service.

There was only one black kid in my school of 1200 in Richmond, though my best pal from 2 yrs old was mixed race. I don't think I saw an Indian person until I was 8. I don't vote UKIP btw.
I popped into Fobi's in Meanwood yesterday for a washing line, its nearly the wifes birthday and all that, the service was good and I much prefer supporting local businesses.

I remember years ago taking a contract in Loughborough (hardly a small town I know, but...) after years working in London. I went into a news agent to buy a paper - and the guy behind the counter started talking to me! I was taken aback, didn't know what to do. That sort of thing just didn't happen to me as a rule!

I like living in a small town, except for if you want to be anonymous (e.g. it's very difficult for me to sit and have a quiet pint and read the newspaper without seeing someone I know and having to chat, for the sake of politeness)

Although the place I live is technically a town of 12,000 population, it is to all intents and purposes part of greater London, with London expectations of what a shopping experience should be like. So it was a pleasant surprise yesterday, when picking up a couple of tyres from my LBS that they'd ordered for me, to end up in a pleasant and interesting 15 minute conversation about the state of the retail market, the unreasonableness of their landlord, and how the 10% CTC discount I'd just availed myself of had affected their profit margin (2% across all their business, so he told me, including allowing for the discounts they give, but as he pointed out, the discount they give is usually within a percent or two the same as Wiggle).
I then comprehensively spoiled my good mood by calling in at Waitrose in search of an illusive ingredient. Talk about home counties pretentiousness - the immaculately dressed and indecently thin woman in front of me was complaining they didn't have any organic cider vinegar.

but I just don't feel as though I fit in. I feel a natural in London, it belongs to me.
Plus I like diversity. Everyone being the same, well, it's just a bit boring. FWIW I spent my life until I was 26 in predominantly white small town places, and that's an important part of my culture. However, 8 of those years were in Scotland. I think there's a difference btw the small Home Counties place and the small East coast of Scotland places. There's no UKIP vote there. That large vote that KIP got in the last elections were in the English Home counties.
I'm not saying that living outside big places does not have it's attractions, but there is a dark downside to the places, which I would grate against.[/quote]
There is a lot of England that is neither London, nor the Home Counties. Most of it would be far more like your Scottish experinces I'd suggest.
