Low Disk Space message

The 'duplicating everything' theory is probably it then. For instance, my folks' pc runs Nero something-or-other which my dad uses to 'album-ise' his photos. All it does is assign photos into albums, so basically it's a different file explorer, really, but he uses it because it pops up whenever he plugs in his camera.

Then, he starts getting these low disk space messages, and it turns out that Nero is copying all the photos from where they are stored (somewhere intelligent like, um, not the C: drive) and stashing them in some obscure c: drive location). Every photo!

Yes Nero was also installed on the old pc so if all this copying stuff is happening well it has to be a part or even the problem itself;)

try and narrow down which sub folder under C: is the guilty one.
Open windows explorer, expand C, and for each sub folder under C:, in turn - do right click, properties. The window that pops up will tell you the size of all the files in that folder and sub folders. The figure will get bigger as it scans sub folders.
Ideally, you would have all user files such as photos, videos, music on a separate disk, e.g. E:, F:, which you have complete control over the structure of, and C: purely for system files. You can then reinstall windows, formatting C:, and you'll still have all your user documents and files again.

so will Windows Explorer. Start Programs Accessories Windows Explorer.

I recently found Nero doing the same thing on my PC it is a very invasive program. It had also decided to do a complete backup every day which made my PC grind completely to a halt.

If you can't alter nero settings you might need to uninstall it and re-install with default settings.

You beat me to that recommendation - proved very useful to me about 2 years ago when I had a weird issue with a massive temporary file that would be created and would just grow and grow until it ate up all my free disk space. Treespace Free enabled me to quickly & effortlessly find the largest files on the PC.

I think the issue was eventually resolved by some Windows update or another.

Google CCleaner and download the latest version. It's an excellent program for killing off all temp files and internet history etc. You should be able to free up loads of space with that. Also worth running the Registry scan to remove all obsolete registry entries as well which will help load up times a little.

you don't need to download CCleaner to do that ;)

just go to Start... Control panel...Internet Options... then select
'clear History'
'delete temp files'

job done.

CCleaner does a lot more than just clean the temp internet files which was why I recommend it. It's free and only abut 3MB download.

I am an IT tech, I do use it, and I've never had a problem with it. Apart from that, it works really well ime

@Radius, apologies, I'm just trying to help you with some friendly advice, not indulge in an argument with Peanut about it.

it wasn't my intention to argue just discuss the merits of something that you have suggested as a solution to a problem posted by Radius.
CCleaner is not going to assist Radius with resolving the issue he has with the hard drive being so full ,I'm not clear why you suggested it ?
I was just saying that every feature you mentioned can be done easily within Control Panel except messing with the registry which I would never recommend personally ;)
