Try dry lube first. Buy a small 60ml bottle (only 3.99, but goes a long way if you apply to each roller individually) and If you're not happy with it, then go to wet lube.

It's much easier to go from dry to wet than the other way around, as you don't have to wipe off a load of wet-lube gunk! I personally have started using Finish Line dry, and am pleased with it.

Finish Line Dry, or Wet !

I've been using that since starting cycling a year ago and like it.

I'm off on a bit of a tour tomorrow so had bought a couple of 4oz bottles a few weeks ago - one to take with me and one to use. Although when I first used it both bottles despite lots of shaking were almost water like - unlike the chalky thicker consistancy that I was used to.

Next time I was in Evans I asked the staff if anything had changed or if there might be a problem - they looked at me like I was a little mental so left without pursuing further but sent a tweet and then an email to manufacturers and had this response.

Not convinced the water like consistancy is as good as the thicker stuff TBH.

Thank you for taking the time to email us. What you are experiencing is due to a formulation change. If you have been cycling for a year (and started buying DRY Lube at the same time) you will have received one of the first batches of the new formula when you started riding. The original formula for DRY Lube was a water like consistency and clear (not white). The first run of the new formula was supposed to be white (and was) and was supposed to have the same consistency (but it was much thicker).

We actually received a number of complaints about how thick the lube was and we corrected our mistake. DRY Lube is now back to its old water like consistency. I can promise that the DRY Lube you have now works just as well (probably better) than what you were using before. But, if you are looking for something closer to that consistency, I might suggest that you try our WET Lube. It is much thicker and will be similar to the consistency of the DRY Lube you previously purchased.

I am very sorry for any confusion this may have caused and I hope this answers you question, but feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

I commute 20+ miles a day. I am using muk-off dry lube and it isn't lasting more than 2 days (when dry). Any ideas on what I can use? I also use the bike on my days off for 50 mile cycles and tend to clean it once every 10 days (how my work pattern is).
Don't really mind wet or dry as I like to clean my bike so I shouldn't get much crap build up.

I'm concerned that your current lube is lasting for 2 days (50 miles) of dry use. In my cycle-commuting days I was getting weeks at 150 miles a week out of a chain lube - and I thought I was being a bit OTT about cleaning and lubing.

Which one to use? I use whatever is cheap at the time. I've been through gazillions of brands over the decades and don't have a favourite.

I think that if you're only getting 50 miles out of a lube job, there may be an issue other than the brand you're using.

What tells you it's all gone? Does it get noisy? Does it feel gritty? Do you get slower?

I can't really see from visual inspection when I need to lube, as I am a keen and vigorous wiper-cleaner of my chain after giving it some attention. The only bits I want to have lube on them are the bits I can't see.

I hope you find your solution (ha ha ha) but I fear there may be another reason why you're having to lube so often. Not the brand.

Boris - the Muc off stuff is crap. I have a bottle and it doesn't last long. I now use it to clean my chain rather than lube.
